Aftermath of the Storm

It just shows how observant we are when we first wake up in the morning, well at least when talking about myself.

After a yesterdays stressful evening of heavy torrential rain I walked downstairs as normal opening the curtains in the hall on my way to the kitchen to make a morning cuppa pausing to look out to see if we'd had anymore rain... luckily we hadn't! Made my morning cuppa and went in to the back room, turned on the lights as it was just starting to get light and sat down to start drinking my tea and checking the news on my phone, all as I always do when I first get up.

I must have sat there for a good five to ten minutes before I realised something was not right... I looked up and BAM! OMG!

Have to say... I literally froze!

Still with my cuppa in one hand and my phone in the other. I couldn't believe what I was looking at!

Wouldn't you think I would have noticed a piece of wallpaper hanging down from the ceiling almost touching the couch as soon as I entered the room! Especially considering the height of our ceilings so the piece of wallpaper was pretty long.

Long story short... we knew coming in to this house there were a fair few problems that we knew we were going to have to tackle, one of which was a 'Bodge Job' repair that had been done on the bay window at the back of the house.

The full report we had paid for had listed this as one of the problems, but we thought we could at least get through this winter before we start on the problems on the report next year. Apparently not!

The previous evenings rain was so heavy that it had broken through the 'Bodge Job' repair and had caused the water to seep through and well... as you can see, come through to the ceiling in the bay window.

As soon as 9am passed we put a call into our trusty builder 'Brad' to see if he could recommend a roofer, which he did and a quick call placed to him and he arranged to come over an hour or so later.

Brad the builder is someone who came highly recommended (actually a guy who came round to clean the oven to make it look and feel like brand new) and believe me when I say Brad will be making quite a few visits in the future!

We've already had him tackle a quick repair on our garage roof and he's also booked to come back in mid November to do some repointing on the outside of the kitchen and sort out the dodgy guttering in that area... oh and he's also going to be doing some carpentry on the back of the front door that Neil's working on.

The final outcome is that we need the felt on the rear bay window replaced and a repair to the flashing and some repointing carried out.

All this is a bit of a concern as we have the decorators booked for the beginning of next week to put a colour wash on the living room to spruce the room up and make it so it's our choice of colours and not the previous owners. Also to repaint the kitchen in white as what's there at the moment is all kinds of different finishes of white. It kind'a looks like they used a silk finish to go over parts to touch them up not realising or indeed caring that the actual kitchen was painted in a matt finish.

So... wish us luck!
